Who handles embryos

Eggs, sperm, and embryos are handled by the embryology and andrology team: laboratory director Dr. José J. Hernández Ledezma; laboratory supervisor Daniel Hernández, MSc; and QFB embryology/andrology staff listed by the clinic. Physicians retrieve eggs and perform transfers; they do not replace the laboratory for culture and freeze.

Culture and fertilization

After retrieval, eggs are identified and either inseminated (conventional IVF) or injected (ICSI). The clinic describes culture through blastocyst development, with transfer considered around day 5 and a stated maximum of two embryos transferred. Ask which incubators and culture media are in use for your cycle — those are fair questions.

Witnessing and identification

Every serious IVF laboratory has a witnessing protocol so that gametes and embryos remain linked to the correct people. Ask Fertilite to walk you through labels, double checks, and any electronic witnessing at retrieval, ICSI, biopsy, freeze, and transfer. Request that the method appear in consent documents.

Cryostorage

Embryos not transferred can be vitrified and stored in the Tijuana laboratory. Ask where tanks sit, how they are filled and alarmed, what happens during a power cut, and how annual storage is billed. If you might later ship embryos to a U.S. clinic, say so before the first freeze.

Biopsy and PGT workflow

If PGT is ordered, trophectoderm biopsy is a laboratory procedure with its own witnessing, tubing, and shipment chain. Confirm whether analysis is in-house or at a named outside genetics laboratory, and who is responsible if a sample fails amplification.

Quality control and backup

Ask about equipment maintenance logs, temperature and gas monitoring, emergency power, and after-hours alarms. A hospital location helps with clinical emergencies; the laboratory still needs its own backup systems for tanks and incubators. We will publish equipment lists and photographs as the clinic releases patient-facing media for this site.

Embryology team

Treat embryologists as visible clinical professionals. Short videos (“here is what happens after retrieval”) are planned once the laboratory records them for this site.
